GoKnow Announces Hurricane Katrina eGallery

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, we at GoKnow believe that schools can play a critical role in helping students understand what happened and help students express their thoughts, concerns, and feelings about this disaster. To encourage discourse on this topic, we at GoKnow are sponsoring the Hurricane Katrina eGallery for student-generated handheld documents.

Teachers: please submit to us documents your students constructed after a lesson on Katrina. The documents should have been created using handheld applications such as Sketchy, FreeWrite, PiCoMap, Pocket Word, etc. GoKnow will then post those documents into the Hurricane Katrina eGallery website, http://www.goknow.com/KatrinaGallery/

The eGallery will contain two categories of submissions: documents that deal with the math and science of hurricanes and documents that deal with the impact of Katrina on adults and children. The documents can come from single applications (e.g., Sketchy) or they can be compound documents (a document that contains a Sketchy and a text document created using HLE Project on the PocketPC or PiCoMap on the Palm).

After collecting these documents, GoKnow will create an online resource to display how students across the globe are thinking and feeling about Katrina in order to help other classrooms discuss Katrina and other natural disasters.  Each student contributing a document to the online Katrina eGallery will receive a Certificate of Contribution, mailed to the school building. In addition to creating the eGallery, GoKnow will make a donation for each submission to the Red Cross; we encourage everyone to make their own donation according to their ability to give.

Some other important details:
1. All documents must be received by Friday, October 28th, 2005.

2. Documents must be created on a handheld device (Palm OS or Pocket PC).

3. Each document should be clearly marked for one of the categories: The Math and Science of Hurricanes, The Impact of Katrina on Adults and Children.

4. Documents cannot include any student names, but should be named for easy identification.

5. You must submit by using PAAM.  For instructions, see "Submitting via PAAM."

6. You do not have to be a current GoKnow customer.  You can download 45-day trials of all needed software from the GoKnow website (http://www.goknow.com/ ).

7. By submitting a document to the Katrina eGallery, you hereby give GoKnow, Inc. and its designees ("Authorized Users") the irrevocable right to use your document and to reproduce such document, in any print, electronic, or other medium for purposes of trade, display, exhibition, promotion, or editorial use.  Understand that school names, grade levels, and locations may be associated with the work, but student names will be omitted.

The Hurricane Katrina eGallery is being organized by:
Kate Levy, Lead Software Engineer, GoKnow, Inc.

See http://www.goknow.com/KatrinaGallery/ for more information on submitting.

I really appreciate the way you took a "real life" situation and incorporated handhelds into a lesson. I am very interested in looking at what students sent in and reading their responses to such a devastating storm.
