Right, I've seen a similar post on this site intended for PCs, so I think one is needed for PDAs. I'm interested in what software people are using on PDAs running Windows Mobile:

Pay software:
  • Mastersoft Brain School - my class love it. Lots of challenging games for a variety of thinking skills.
  • Flip It! - A doodling program which works like a flipbook.

Free software:
  • Trip Yzee 2 - Yahtzee, basically. My class have had problems getting the 2 player to work on WM5 (still worth it though) but it seems to be fine on WM6.
  • Guesser 2 - chooses things at random, such as dice rolling, heads/tails, paper/scissors/stone.
  • Pencil Box - very basic drawing package, but delightfully simple to use.
  • VS Painter - fairly well featured graphics program for editing pictures and drawing new ones.

More to come (or you could look on my sitehttp://www.mrportman.co.uk/blog1.php/handhelds/handheldsoftware/)

Hi Clive

You could also try some of the maths software on Professor Tom O'Brien's site at:
http://www.professortobbs.com/software.htm

Although I think this is mainly for Palm OS (You can always use the Styletap emulator for Windows Mobile)

There's a nice bundle of applications that come with RedHalo including:

PhatPad - sketching, animating, voice annotated drawing, etc (also works on Windows XP/Vista)
Inspiration - visual mapping
Opera - one of the best web browsers for WM
Calligrapher - makes handwriting recognition on WM bearable
Pocket Painter - a terrific painting and image manipulation app
Photo Explorer - an image presentation tool with audio
Red Media Composer - a WM multimedia presentation studio
Red Flipper - simple stop frame animation
RedActivity - a project oriented operating environment that allow learners to evidence their learning

More information about the applications here:
http://www.redhalo.com/applications_pocket_pc.html

I should declare an interested in that the RedHalo system was developed by Handheld Learning's research team in Cambridge, UK.

Hi Clive,
I am just setting up a Year 6 PDA project in Hertfordshire to run from September. We are going to be using:

SUMS Online
Big Bus
Red Halo Suite
The Windows Mobile 6 applications
Lots of eBooks. There are lots of free ebooks available (we're using .lit format) and now you can buy graded readers as eBooks from www.i-stars.co.uk. You can download a free book from there too. And with the MS Reader add-on for MS Word you (or rather the youngsters) can make their own eBooks.
Pocket Podcasts (a free podcast aggregator)

We're using Synchroneyes as well.

I've also been looking at different online services/application to see how well they work on the PDA. We've been looking at, for example, Survey Monkey (which seems to work OK,) My Studiyo (which didn't display properly on the PDA,) Making the News (a bit like a simple blog, hosted by E2BN - we were able to view and comment on postings without too much difficulty.) With so many excellent free web-based resources available it seemed like a good opportunity to expand our opportunities at no extra cost!
