Online learning is a general term
to describe education or training
which occurs over the internet or
a wide area network, rather than in
a traditional classroom scenario.
It is similar in definition to e-learning
with regards to using technology to
assist in study, but online learning
focusses mainly on the internet and
world wide web applications as the
primary educational conduits. Most
people use the terms interchangeably.
Online learning frees learners to
be able to learn from anywhere, and
usually any time, depending on whether
the systems used for online learning
can be set up to act autonomously,
or by teacher direction.
Web and internet learning systems
have been around for a while, but
are only now becoming accessible and
standardised enough for most schools
and educational establishments to
start considering as valid tools for
studying. With hardware becoming more
affordable and software becoming more
developed, many places are successfully
implementing these systems at quite
a cheap price.
