Hi All

I am presenting a workshop on handheld devices and learning objects at the Institutional Web Management conference in July this year http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/web-focus/events/workshops/webmaster-2007/sessions/smith/. I am going to be looking at the different types of devices a student might be using and the sort of things that can and cannot be done with them.

I am looking or good examples of work with different devices that colleagues here might be happy for me to include as examples (it's free publicity!!  Grin). The objects do not have to work on every device going; that is part of the point to consider the barriers as well as the advantages.

So please send your links!

Cheers

You can find some examples of what is being done with StreetAccess i-Guide software at www.streetaccess.co.uk/sa.html. No log-in is required to look at these - simply click preview.
i-Guide is a tool that allows teachers to create their own interactive content for any device with an html browser - smartphones, wireless PDAs, Sony PSPs, for example. The content is not device specific. We also work with museum and gallery education staff, hence the numerous museum education tours there. If you are interested I can point you in the direction of other materials created by schools. Probably best to do this offline since these are not made publicly available, though I'm sure the schools in question would welcome publicity if asked.

Hello Stuart
Thought I should mention WildKeys experience with handhelds....around 1200 students have now used our initial products which focussed on wildlife identification...we try and capatilise on all the benefits that a handheld device can provide and make use of the high quality screens (for images of wildlife), gps (for recording location), camera (to take image of species) and of course the mobility of a device (when you are chasing a butterfly it comes in handy!)...to date we have focussed on PDAs/smartphones as devices (mainly due to the need for GPS)...this has advantages in that you don't need web access but obviously involves uploading and downloading to/from the device...for more on the use of handhelds for wildlife id see www.wildkey.co.uk and click wildkey in action....interestingly as we have diversified (wilddata - teachers create their own recording forms) and wildmap (teachers creat their own web trails) we still rely heavily on gps....as such until phones tend to have GPS integrated as standard we still see a role for PDAs/EDAs in the forseeable future
...if you want a copy of our research findings let me know

Dear Johnny and Neil

Many thanks to both of you for these links and for the offers of the further information. They look very interesting and should prove to be very helpful.  Grin

No doubt, as my paper progresses I will probably need to contact you both, but in the meantime many thanks Smiley

As part of the Bristol Hande-Learning Project we have been developing an 'e-logging' system for use on handhelds.  Examples of this can be seen at blog.bristolclcs.org.uk.  Our main Hande-Learning site is @ http://www.bristolclcs.org.uk/?_id=387.

Cheers

Just some brief opening comments about IWMW 2007 here

http://3sheep.wordpress.com/2007/07/20/iwmw-2007-review/

I still haven't fully assesed the full impact of my presentation on mobile devices but my early feeling is that HE still has a long way to go, which does put me a little ahead of the game but its a lonely existence (sigh!!!) LOL
