Palm will not be exhibiting at NECC 2006.
Does this mean the final demise of Palm in the education sector?

That may be FireStarter but Palm are supporting Handheld Learning 2006 so perhaps the suggestion of their demise is somewhat premature.
True the lack of multimedia features such as Flash compatibility and audio recording on the otherwise excellent T/X model is disappointing but they are doing a roaring trade with the Treo smartphone (Palm OS or Windows Mobile flavours) which is undoubtedly where most of their resources are going.
Achieving high penetration in the smartphone sector is probably not a bad idea and may indeed bring Palm inadvertedly back into the education sector, especially if smartphones move from the expensive high-tier to the affordable mid-tier market where the big volumes are. Thus learners may then already be carrying some programmable, web and camera enabled devices that can work across 3G and WiFi.

The main reason for Palm not attending NECC (and they're not the only ones, btw) is the timing of the conference. The conference takes place during the July 4 week, a week in which many people take off for vacation (and July 4 is a holiday for most). Palm made the decision not to attend due to the high cost to them to send people to San Diego and having them to pay overtime etc. to set up for the show on July 2 and 3, be in San Diego on the 4th, and then do the show.
Besides vendors not coming, it'll be interesting to see how much attendance will drop off this year because of when NECC takes place this year.
