Hi there

I was wandering around the BETT show and saw some demonstrations using PDAs with interactive whiteboards. Somebody on the Handheld Learning stand told me that there was some free or shareware available that would work with either Palm or Pocket PC and a variety of whiteboards.

Unfortunately I've lost my notes and can't remember what the software was called or where to get it.

Does anybody know or can anybody recommend software that will allow me to use a classroom of PDAs, either Palm or PPC, with a whiteboard for applications such as voting or demonstrating?

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

Simone,

There where a few, one of which was discussed on the Handlheld Learning stand - for my sins I've forgotten their name (shame on me) but Graham et al., will fill the gaps.

Interms of a PRS - there is also Turning Point http://www.turningtechnologies.com/ - this has PDA software (pocket pc, and palm on the way).  I thought this looked really good as you can include free text answers, it works very well with powerpoint, and for those who need to pull results to central databases, and import questions there are some opportunities.

I hope that helps ....

Cheers

A free solution that provides voting and PowerPoint integration is the ClassInHand software from Wake Forest University that can be downloaded from:

http://classinhand.wfu.edu/

This software turns the teachers or lecturers device into a receiver the results of which can be projected onto any whiteboard or other projection device / screen.

According to the WFU site, the software features include:
  • An instant-on, easy-to-manage portable web server that is completely under your control
  • Presentation capabilities that enable you to use the PocketPC as a remote control to navigate to a PowerPoint presentation on your desktop or laptop computer, start and manage the presentation, and see slide text and speaker notes on your PocketPC.
  • A quizzing feature that enables you to present a question with up to four answers and see the distribution of student responses immediately on your PocketPC. You can also choose to display the results to the class.
  • A text feedback mechanism that enables your students or audience to submit questions or comments that show immediately on your PocketPC.
  • A feedback meter that enables students to submit numeric reponses (range: -10 to 10) according to your directions. These submissions show as a continuous curve on your PocketPC and are useful for quick assessments.

and it's free Cheesy

I have used VNC on my PocketPC in order to remotely control other PCs and Macs. However it is not the fastest in the world but I was using an older HP iPaq. I didn't use it with an Interactive Whiteboard, but SMARTBoard software can be used without a whiteboard thus I expect using it over a VNC connection would work.

VNC Viewer for PocketPC 3.3.5.1

RealVNC for Windows

OSXvnc

However OS 10.4 now has VNC server software built in as part of Apple Remote Desktop.

Not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but our software allows you to create your own interactive online content which, assuming you have wireless for the PDAs and an internet connection for the interactive whiteboard, would allow you to demonstrate your material on-screen while the students access the same (or related) material on their PDAs. It doesn't have voting, but student responses (multiple choice, text entry or whatever) are recorded and stored online where you or the students can access them later.
Sadly, it's not free  Sad
