An excellent report Bob - that captures the spirit of Cape Town - where the sun shone every day and the conference organisation was superb. Bob is too modest to say that his passionate rebuttal of the pessimistic ("m-learning has failed") keynote talks was also one of the highlights of the conference.

mLearn 2006 is in the spectacular report of Banff, Canada. Start saving for the air ticket!

I'd like to add an endorsement to Mike's comment - Bob bravely said what the rest of us had been muttering. How can m-learning be failing when you listen to Nellie de Crom and Annette de Jager from Tshwane University of Technology's beautifully illustrated presentation on their successful use of handheld PCs on field trips into the South African bush to teach ecotourism?

Yup! Agreed!

On the one side, watching m-learning make significant changes to disengaged student's lives first hand.

On the other, hearing a keynote that said it was failing

those two just didn't fit together for me. I am pleased they didn't fit for so many others as well!

Thanks all for an amazing conference, and many inspiring conversations

Agree with all of the above comments, especially seeing Bob's great face paint at the conference dinner - but I'm still not sure that I'm ready to jump on the 'it's time for mobile to get into the mainstream' bandwagon.  There are still a lot more questions to be asked about designing mobile learning contexts, the relationship between the gathered classroom and located events, the role of the expert etc - all of these need exploring further before wide spread use takes place - otherwise we're going to end up with a technical fix to current practices, rather than a real movement towards a 'better' education system.

A great thought provoking conference should always leave you with more questions that answers - and that's what mLearn did for me.
