I have just read the Jan 14 TES Teacher, and found an article about Pegasus Mobile Notetaker. http://www.apcom.ltd.uk/view.php A little web research reveals both rave reviews and total disillusionment (and of course a price difference - US$169 and £125, depending on where you buy).
Has anyone used this device in school?  Any advice?  Is it just another gadget, or would it be useful in a situation where a tablet PC is unavailable, or for some reason not appropriate?

Personally, I've never had much success with writing recognition software as my handwriting makes a medical doctors look like fine calligraphy!

I've no experience of this product but I suspect it's usefulness will be based upon the quality of its recognition software and thus how much time it saves. If you have to spend ages re-editing and correcting on a PC it doesn't really help.

What might be really interesting is if the manufacturers ditched the receiver part of the pen and did all the logic inside a PDA or handheld computer (so the handheld becomes the reciever) thus reducing the cost of the device and adding a potentially useful input device to the world of the handheld. Then if you wanted to transfer from the handheld to the PC you'd just sync.

We can already record audio to handhelds so we just need some good voice recognition and transcribing software but that's a little way off...

I don't think it's the hand recognition bit that is important, it's more exciting for the fact that it picks up notes and diagrams. If in education we are moving (very slowly) towards some form of digital life blog, rather than having to scan in loads of paper based stuff these devises make it quick and easy (?) to capture more authentic classroom activity. You might also want to look at the Logitech iO pen and the bluetooth Nokia digital pen, both work on special paper, but have even more of the feel of working with 'real world' pen and paper.
