Microsoft have launched the new version of their Windows Mobile operating system.

Here's a couple of interesting news stories and links:

MAY. 10 2:04 P.M. ET Microsoft Corp. unveiled Tuesday a new version of its Windows operating system for mobile devices that adds such features as PowerPoint viewing while making it easier for gadget makers to equip phones and handheld computers with typewriter keyboards and iPod-sized hard drives.

Windows Mobile 5.0, introduced by Chairman Bill Gates at the company's annual conference for mobile software developers in Las Vegas, also marks an about-face in marketing by eliminating the distinct Pocket PC and Smartphone brands of the operating system.

Other feature enhancements include updates to the mobile versions of Microsoft Word and Excel that better maintain the formatting of documents created on a computer and allow charts to be created from a spreadsheet.

Hewlett Packard announce upgrades for their handheld computer range:

Quote

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 10, 2005 – HP today announced an upgrade program to Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 for customers with select HP iPAQ handhelds as well as plans to support the new version of the software platform in its future mobile offerings.

HP iPAQ handhelds with Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 will provide customers with enhanced mobile communication, entertainment and productivity through simpler navigation and access to data, an improved Mobile Office suite, along with a more powerful, integrated multimedia experience.

“Since the introduction of the Windows Mobile platform more than five years ago, HP and Microsoft have worked together to offer customers innovative mobile tools to further improve their mobile experience,” said Eric Kilponen, director of product marketing, handheld division, HP. “With Windows Mobile 5.0 for HP’s award-winning iPAQ line, customers will benefit from ‘persistent memory storage’ that ensures that devices will retain all their business data, even when the battery is depleted. Further, customers can increase productivity through faster access to information and updates to familiar business applications, such as Outlook and Office.”

HP will offer Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrades for the HP iPAQ hx2100, hx2400, hx2700 and hx4700 series of handhelds. These software upgrades are expected to be available this summer and can be purchased directly from HP

Does anyone have any idea of what the differences are between Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 2003.  I have an IPAQ 5450 and the features described for Windows Mobile 2003 look nice - automatic wi-fi connections and the like.  Then I come across Windows Mobile 5.  I've browsed around, and so far it does not appear to be available for the IPAQ 5450.

I currently have Pocket PC 2003 and its OK, but as with all MS operating systems, there is room for improvement. Does anybody know of something that is available now that might help (I'm particularly interested in the OS with a little button that switches the display to landscape mode.

Am I missing something in my brief look at Windows Mobile 5.0 or has Word Mobile lost some of the better features of Pocket Word?
I really liked the different modes within Pocket Word - Writing, Drawing, Typing and Recording.  Have these gone?
I was also expecting to be able to insert pictures from the in-built camera, but this doesn't seem to have been implemented.
OK so it retains more formatting from Word, but I never found this to be a problem anyway.
If these features have gone and we still can't add pictures then this seems to me to be both a retrograde step and a missed opportunity, and I'll stick with Windows Mobile 2003.
Am I right and if so doesanyone know if there are better alternatives to Word Mobile?
