Hi Leeg and welcome to the forum!

In answer to your questions here and in your other posts. You should speak to the public sector accounts teams of the major mobile operators, e.g. O2, T-Mobile, Vodafone, 3, etc that have good 3G data coverage in your area.

If you're concerned about voice calls you should be able to contract with there operators for data only contracts thus avoiding voice call charges. Some of these contracts do allow a "pay as you go" voice option that allow the student to use the phones for talking also. Subject to your requirements you might also want to consider other technologies such as Sony PSP which have excellent web browsing capability over wireless and are significantly cheaper than mobile phone based devices. You may also find that many of your students already own one!

Be aware of some of the restrictions that have been put on mobile internet devices to limit access to various internet sites. To prevent access to adult material the filters are still quite primitive and are causing a lot of upset amongst students who can't access their favourite non-adult sites. Annoying if they or their parents are paying for it.

There are many devices available and you should decide what you want them for and test a few models with the help and input of your students.

Be aware that if you're using all the devices in school at the same time it is likely that the 3G connections will not keep up as cell antenna's have limited capacity so your devices will need to use the school wi-fi which can also be a challenge and may require a substantial upgrade in infrastructure and bandwidth.

Last but certainly not least is determining how these devices will be embedded within teaching practice and what support will be provided to your teachers.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hey Everybody - I am writing in order to establish some contacts regarding the use of mobilephones in the education system in UK, especially the secondary schools.

I am a danish journalist, teacher and mediaconsultant, and I will be visiting the Bett Show 09´in Olympia Hall at the 15. and 16. of january with more that 150 other danish teachers and consultants.

In connection with that tour, I would like to visit a secondary school in London that uses the mobile phone in a learning project with a group of 12 consultants.  I am especially interested in projects where videoproduction with the mobile phone is included. If you by any chance can put me in contact with a school, teacher or headmaster that could help me organize such a visit for aproximately 2 hours in the London Area,  please let me know.

I am looking forward to hear from you.
My mobile phone number in Denmark is + 45 40923933

Hi Grayham

Thanks for your post.

We have a good Infrastructure in place and a very good 3com wireless network that covers the entire site with back end management from the WX range. We are running Windows Server 2008 and plan to impliment SCMDM to control the smartphones.

I'm looking at the new HP IPAQ Data Manager SmartPhone but not to sure of what educational software i can use i.e. Sycronise etc.

What we require is for students to be fully interacted with the solution and not push it aside and from what i have read about mobile technologies in schools is that you need the pupils to want to use the device. I went to a conference at the JJB on Mobile technologies in Education and the speaker David Whyley who i'm sure you know has gone down the PDA route for sometime now and phase 5 of the learning2go project is looking at Smartphones.

I would love any help on smartphones and education.

Cheers
