Today Google unveiled the G1 (or the Google Phone).

The first mobile telephone using Google's Android software has been unveiled.

The T-Mobile G1 handset will be available in the UK in time for Christmas.

The first device to run the search giant's operating system will feature a touch screen as well as a Qwerty keyboard.

It will be available for free on T-Mobile tariffs of over £40 a month and includes unlimited net browsing.

Other features include a three megapixel camera, a 'one click' contextual search and a browser that users can zoom in on by tapping the screen.

Users will also have access the so-called Android Market, where they will be able to download a variety of applications.

FOR ANYONE THAT DOWNLOADED THE SDK FOR ANDROID FROM GOOGLE CODE I WAS SHOCKED BY HOW DIFFERENT THE PHONE DESIGN IS FROM THE SDK ..................................

Another nail in the coffin of Windows Mobile perhaps?

Microsoft seem preoccupied in maintaining their desktop dominance as well as fending of cheap Linux laptops to innovate on mobile at the moment.

My guess is that we're heading for a Symbian, Android, iPhone universe based around AJAX mobile web standards.

Popped into my local T-Mobile store to ask about the G1.

It will be released and available on 1st November.

I asked about upgrading and was told that it would not be possible until January due to T-Mobile's financial year.

Wonder if I can get a review phone...

Make sure you get a front row seat for the Industry Announcements at the HHL Conference on Tuesday morning at 09:30

I'd gladly supply a crate of nails and a hammer.

Thomas Cochrane summed it up very well at mlearn08....."What student would buy a windows mobile device". and somethng a bit stronger :-)

Can I just say that the T-Mobile announcement was rather disappointing...

;-)


However I was able to get my hands on a real G1 the following day.

I still think Windows mobile has a great deal to offer learners.
The continuity between desktop and handheld with common applications and portability of documents makes the introduction of such devices a painless process. Eventually I see mobile becoming a complete browser based experience which will change everything for the better through online collaboration access to document anytime, anywhere through multiploe techonlogical mediums...but whilst infrastuctures remain as they are we are still some way off!! As 3G networks become more robust and wireless connectively gets better and better we move towards this - and there are exciting times ahead but whilst gazing towards the future we should also consider the logistical complexities faced by existing learners.
