Hi Jon

I keep hearing about Cobalt which I understand is an operating system but why is it better (or worse) than any other?

Maybe as long as it takes an iPod to start-up?

Does anyone want to buy my iPod, I think I'd like one of these instead if they did them in pink  Wink

Good point Simone, but you dont use your exercise book as your diary. It depends how much control of the device the school has I suppose.  I'd love to hear how the Dudley project is coming along, I wonder if any of its particpants are lurking :-) It could be interesting to compare how thats coming along with some of Tony Vincents experiences.

btw Simone are you in the UK?

Its good theres some discussion going here.

Jon, yes in the UK doing my masters

By centralised monitoring I meant in the same way that a perhaps exercise books are used to hand in work so that the teacher can measure/evaluate progress but I can see how this might be seen as making the device less personal but then again teachers and parents have access to exercise books but that doesn't make them less personal to the pupil or does it?

I like the idea of e-books and simple to use authoring programmes.

Perhaps a centralised monitoring system for the teachers to view pupil progress and usage of the PDA's

Hi!

Thanks for all the help and advice so far, it has certainly given me a lot to think about

I'm just doing research at the moment and not actually working with children so it's all a bit theoretical so far. My interest in Wi-Fi etc was really to do with accessing school networks and sharing information via a central network perhaps with some browsing of sites or intranets designed specially for PDA access. Early days though and I'm pleased this forum is here and that there are people willing to share ideas!

Happy New Year!

Hi

Ok thanks, I guess I'm wondering what is going to be easier for children to connect using a PDA so from what I'm gleaning from all this is that probably Wi-Fi is going to be the best solution in a school?

Hi

Thanks for your advice, I'll check out the links.

My MA is geared towards the use of PDA's by children in the Key Stage 1-3 range, i.e. 5-14 years of age. My feeling is that the Palm might be a better choice for this group but as mentioned it will come down to what software is available.

I'm wondering whether the Nintendo Gameboy could be considered as a PDA given that many children in this age group are already very adept in its usage! However I guess that there's very little educational software for the Gameboy. I think that the Leapfrog Leapster is an interesting idea at the PDA for pre-schoolers also.

Hello

Sorry, I seem to be asking lots of questions on this forum!  Huh

I'm a bit confused over the difference's between Bluetooth networking and Wi-Fi. At first I thought that it you could only access the Internet with a PDA via Wi-Fi but someone told me that you could also do this with Bluetooth. So what's the difference and what's better?

Thanks for your help

I am presently engaged in some MA research based on the future of technologies in schools and it seems that there appears to be two camps of thought one that says that Palm is best, the other Pocket PC. Then, of course, there are those that believe that the Tablet PC is way forward.

I wondered what other people thought on this subject?
