This is interesting!

We have RedHalo running on 30 Acer PDA's. If pupils want to access RedHalo using their own PSP do we need to buy more RedHalo?

This is an interesting report because it is using smart phones and their individual connections to the internet. I've often wondered how this might be an improvement to using the school wireless network which are often unreliable and almost impossible to manage between school and home.

There's also the benefit of not having to be concerned about whether the students have internet access at home because they can use the phone. However I wonder how such a project sits with the current concerns about using mobile phones in schools?

You could try the Acer n311, they are small, light, with a very nice screen and cost less than £200

Hello  Smiley

I've been working on a small project using Acer handhelds as we couldn't afford EDA's  Cry but we got Red Halo and have been using Phatpad that comes with it and also comes with a version for our tablet and desktop PC's. This has been a good combination and I wondered how you thought this compared to One Note?

I was told that the mobile version of One Note didn't support the stylus on handhelds but this seems a bit odd to me!

Also we're looking forward to integrating our handhelds with the whiteboards which is supposed to come with Red Halo this Summer (so I'm told  Wink )

Happy Easter!

For the past 3 years I've been working on the e-scape (e-solutions for
creative assessment in portfolio environments) project at TERU  (Technology Education Research Unit) Based at
Goldsmiths University, the project is funded by DfES and QCA in
association with Edexcel and AQA awarding bodies.

Despite the fact that learning activities in d&t and other areas of
the cur. . .

This is a really interesting project. It's great to learn how you've used handhelds to do something that would be virtually impossible otherwise.

Thanks for the information!
8  General Area / General Discussion / School Ban on Mobile Phones on: March 04, 2007, 11:58:37 PM
The following extract is from an inner city primary school parents newsletter:

Quote
There may be very exceptional circumstances in which children need to carry a mobile phone to school. If the phone is a true necessity, parents need to contact the school office for authorisation for the phone to be carried to school. The phone then needs to be turned off, left in the office before class and collected at home time. Mobile phones without authorisation will be taken off children and parents then phoned to come and retrieve them. As with all personal property, the school cannot take responsibility for the loss or theft of a mobile phone

I found this extract somewhat disturbing and wondered what other members of this forum thought. Of course, one imagines what might have precipitated such a note; phones disturbing classes, getting lost, stolen, etc. But clearly not yet seeing the possibilities of the power in the pocket and perhaps the need to establish a usage policy rather than a ban. The school is rightly proud of their ICT suite where they teach keyboard skills to Year One.

I also thought it was worth posting here so that it would be held in posterity as something that might (hopefully) be looked back on in a different light.
9  Technology matters / Phones and PDAs / Inspiration for Windows Mobile 5 on: February 14, 2007, 08:05:24 AM
Does anybody know if Inspiration works with Windows Mobile 5?

The version I have doesn't seem to work and there's nothing on the Inspiration website.

This is a general educational technology blog but I enjoyed Ewan McIntosh's observations of this years excellent Handheld Learning conference.

12  Technology matters / iPod & media players / Profcast - podcasting software on: June 07, 2006, 07:11:56 PM
Just thought people here would like to know about some shareware called Profcast.

It works on a Mac and allows you to record your voice presentation and Powerpoint slides simultaneously and create a podcast from them.

I've just started using it but have found it very simple to use having now created a few simple podcasts.

The software costs $30 if you want to continue using it after 15 days which I will be!

14  General Area / General Discussion / Re: Television on Your Mobile? on: January 19, 2006, 06:00:43 PM
I can't see how this would be of use in an educational context unless it was video on demand. I like the idea of vodcasting and can see a lot of possibilities for organisations such as the BBC, Teachers TV or Channel 4 distributing curriculum relevant material using this technique to handheld devices especially if it can be done overnight then used the next day. As ifelix suggests this material would then be more useful because the students can use it anytime, rewind, fast-forward, repeat and reflect.

I wouldn't subscribe to broadcast television on a mobile phone but I could understand why an authority would subscribe to materials from the beeb provided via vodcast although I imagine they would be free.
15  Technology matters / General Technology Chat / PDA software for Interactive Whiteboards on: January 17, 2006, 02:25:25 PM
Hi there

I was wandering around the BETT show and saw some demonstrations using PDAs with interactive whiteboards. Somebody on the Handheld Learning stand told me that there was some free or shareware available that would work with either Palm or Pocket PC and a variety of whiteboards.

Unfortunately I've lost my notes and can't remember what the software was called or where to get it.

Does anybody know or can anybody recommend software that will allow me to use a classroom of PDAs, either Palm or PPC, with a whiteboard for applications such as voting or demonstrating?

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

Simone
