Here's the first batch of slides that have been sent in from speakers that participated in this years conference. Many thanks for being so prompt - it certainly helps a lot at HHL Towers (Basement?  Wink ).

If you were a speaker or were involved in the Pecha Kucha session and would like your contribution to be immortalised in this years digital proceedings please send your presentation to me - graham (at) handheldlearning.co.uk in ppt or pdf format using yousendit.com or mailbigfile.com

Thanks!

This is looking set to be great fun!

Dan Sutch from Futurelab has kindly agreed to facilitate and disorganise  Wink so please support this excursion from the traditional pre-organised "sage on the stage' approach to conferencing.

Sessions starts at 14:00 and is being held in the Smeaton Queen Vault (lower ground floor)

Just turn up with your 20 slides presentation with each slide advancing automatically after 20 seconds giving you a presentation slot of 6'40.

There's a laptop in the room running Vista and Powerpoint 2007, so bring your presentation on a memory stick if possible. Mac users please bring your own including VGA adaptor.

Each slot may then precipitate a discussion with fellow delegates and attendees.

This is free to attend session so please get involved.

39  For learners and educators / Game Based Learning / Game Based Learning Community on: October 10, 2008, 11:38:06 PM
You are invited to join the new Game Based Learning Community that we are forming at:

http://www.gamebasedlearning.org.uk

It's currently in it's Alpha stage of development but we'd very much like members of the Handheld Learning Community to help us develop this community leading to a one day symposium on March 20th.

Our intention is to form an archipelago of communities that explore new learning and teaching practices from different perspectives. Being online means that each community can feed into the other and share knowledge and experiences in much the way that the HHL community has built steadily over the past 5 years with the help and support of its members.

Please get involved if this area of learning and teaching tickles your fancy.

Thanks!

Graham

41  For learners and educators / Game Based Learning / The Future of Reading - Using Video Games on: October 10, 2008, 04:22:18 PM
Interesting article in the New York Times about how children are learning to read motivated by using video games:

Quote
“You can’t just make a book anymore,” said Mr. Haarsma, a former advertising consultant. Pairing a video game with a novel for young readers, he added, “brings the book into their world, as opposed to going the other way around.”

Mr. Haarsma is not the only one using video games to spark an interest in books. Increasingly, authors, teachers, librarians and publishers are embracing this fast-paced, image-laden world in the hope that the games will draw children to reading.

Spurred by arguments that video games also may teach a kind of digital literacy that is becoming as important as proficiency in print, libraries are hosting gaming tournaments, while schools are exploring how to incorporate video games in the classroom. In New York, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is supporting efforts to create a proposed public school that will use principles of game design like instant feedback and graphic imagery to promote learning.

Publishers, meanwhile, are rushing to get in on the action. Scholastic, the American publisher of the Harry Potter series, recently released “The Maze of Bones,” the first installment in a 10-book mystery series that is tied to a Web-based game.

Tonight at midnight (UK time) is the last opportunity to make your votes for winners for this years Handheld Learning Awards for Innovation. We have already received a large number of  votes and they are coming in fast so please make yours count if you haven't yet done so.

More info at:
http://www.handheldlearning2008.com/awards

It's great to see that many of the finalists are promoting themselves both here and through platforms such as Facebook to canvas votes. There have also been a couple of examples where local press have picked up on their local hero innovators. Take Steve Pritchard in Nottingham for example:

45  General Area / News & Events / Using your Nintendo DS @ Handheld Learning 2008 on: October 03, 2008, 04:43:51 PM
All you early birds that registered for the conference and got yourself a free Nintendo DS, please don't forget to bring it with you fully charged and raring to go.

One of the things you'll be doing with it during the conference sessions is chattingand sharing your thoughts with each other. You may even find yourself in groups where you'll be asked to present some of your thinking to the wider audience.

The technology you'll be using to do this is already built-in to your DS and it's called Pictochat. If you haven't used Pictochat yet don't worry because you'll soon get the hang of it.

Steve Bunce of Northumberland County Council has very graciously produced both a video and downloadable how-to guide that will get you started. If you're still a bit stuck find a 5 year old who will be more than happy to help out. Ideally you should try this out with another DS owning friend before you come to the conference but there will also be plenty of opportunities on the first day.

http://blip.tv/file/get/Grahambm-PictochatForDummiesBySteveBunce728.flv

Download the guide here

Thanks once again to Steve Bunce!!  Smiley

Also for those fancying a bit of mobile phone action then make sure you're ready to tweet with twitter by following Tony Vincent's guide here.

We will also be using Txttools "question by txt" system in the main auditorium where you simply send a txt with your question preceded by HHL to 88020

It's all mobiletastic!
