31  General Area / General Discussion / Re: Is lurking learning ? on: November 29, 2005, 08:36:07 PM
Well at least you replied Thanks Dan. No seriously I in my work for Becta contribute to a very active list around Further Education college staff involved around e learning and though as always (and quite legitimately) a lot of people don't post a vast range of people do. I wonder if communities on-line survive and thrive over the years that more people post as a percentage of members of the community .

I am fascinated by the role of how something like the Frappr map see last item on user menu on the left allows us to see who we are corresponding with. Even if its an avatar or a graphic anyhow feel free to lurk but if you feel the urge to post go on be a devil.

Completely repsect Dans comment that you only pick up and post stuff you feel happy with !

Hi all

Just a thought to help Andy Ramsden out who has put himself on the map but worried about what to say about himself.

Heres two suggestions

1)website  put up your URL for your site  if you have one.

2) Blog put your blog address up if you have one .

I would be really interested in blogs .

http://www.andysblackhole.blogspot.com is mine.

Note the link to frappr menu on the left.

Hi all

I was lucky enough to meet up with some forum members F2F earlier in the week. Jon Trinder, Andy Ramsden and we discussed how the forum had grown and how great the conference last month was.

But the issue of how many people post versus how many people read. Now I am new at the handheld lark my main experience has been pc based e learning but I have contributed to the forum.

I and others would be interested in others views and contributions theirs loads of experience and ideas out they’re let share it!! Or am I just sounding of (if so sorry).

I’ve got an interest in British sign language and am currently looking at putting a 1500 BSL glossary onto PDA .

So anybody working with PDA's with Deaf community or those learning to sign .

It’s great to lurk and learn but it’s also pretty cool  Cool  to contribute. Take care

36  Technology matters / Phones and PDAs / The humble mobile just keeps growing on: November 24, 2005, 09:36:43 PM
Global sales of mobile phones are booming according to article on the BBC
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4459278.stm

Worldwide mobile phone sales rose by 22% in the three months to September.

Handset sales hit 205 million, said research firm Gartner, which forecast total sales of 810 million for 2005.

Sales grew more slowly than the 26% seen in the same period of 2004 - but surged over 40% in Eastern Europe, Africa and Latin America.

These figures convince me that the phone is the device and convergence of devices make it Even more likely.

Anyone else got a view

Becta Expert Technology Seminar - Enabling flexibility

      FREE seminar

      Thursday, 8 December 2005

      Manchester Conference Centre

Providing access to learning at a time and place that suits the learner can be achieved in many ways, through services extended by academic institutions; in the home and the library; through the learner's own personal device of choice (phone, handheld or portable computer) To deliver true 24/7 access to learning for all learners will not only impact on the traditional educational institution, but will also have considerable social implications.

How realistic is this vision when coupled with the flexibility inherent in the personalised learning and 14-19 reform agendas?

What role can current and emerging technologies play in assisting to bring about anytime anywhere learning and to what extent should we invest in technological solutions to ensure flexibility for all learners, educators and administrators.

This FREE seminar will try to address some of these questions and has the following themes

      1. Access to learning at a time and place that suits the learner (VLEs/external access)

      2. Services extended by academic institutions (ISPs, WMAN)

      3. The learner’s own personal device of choice (Phone, handheld or portable computer)

      4.  Digital divide (there will be a panel discussion on this subject)

      5. Personalised learning and 14-19 reform agendas

      6. Current and emerging technologies

flash player 7 beta testing
Interesting this new version out on beta testing is released just after they threatned to withdraw the free player. Was the threat and ensuing outcry and retreat by macromedia a way of getting intelligence or am I just an old cynic .

I would follow the link and do the survey (more intelligence ??) and see if you get a sneak preview. Interesting to see they use survey monkey (all the best people do) ;-) see original below .

Original email from Macromedia

Dear PocketPC developer -

Macromedia is currently working on an update of our Flash Player Source Code SDK.  As part of this development/testing process, we are creating an updated version of Flash Player for PocketPC that will be based on Flash Player 7.

I am contacting you to see if you are interested in participating in our upcoming Flash Player 7 for PocketPC beta program.  As a beta participant, you would be expected to install the Flash Player and provide testing feedback to our engineering team, regarding the playback of content on your device.

If you are interested in participating in the Flash Player 7 for PocketPC beta program, please fill out the following beta survey and you will be contacted for follow-up:

The only negatives and I am struggling where lack of delegate list don't want emails obviously for data protection act  reasons but names and organisations would be good. You should do an online event feedback form because I thought event was most energising one i have been to for years.

I think all us thought all the stuffs coming together and kicking off so to speak.

Good one great delivery on the handheld event and your daughter to !!!

Hi Andy,

Apologies for not replying sooner.

Thanks for taking the time to contact us to let us know how you feel about the recent removal of the free Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC from our site.

My intention is to provide an open dialog with you and other developers about the FP6 for PPC and to answer your questions - I want to provide you with as much information as I can.

The free download allowed anyone (developers, consumers) to view Flash content in PIE or outside of PIE using a 3rd party solution which required the ActiveX control to be installed on the end-users PPC. The free FP6 for PPC download was developed 2 years ago and tested and certified on Pocket PC 2003 OS devices - it's as is.  We don't offer any support for other PPC OS devices (Windows Mobile 5.0 for example).

The Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC Distribution Kit (previously known as the Standalone Player for PPC) ($500) is meant for developers who want to create Flash content and to sell it with the FP6 packaged with it - as one file.  It’s not meant to be used by consumers or developers interested in just viewing SWF files on their Pocket PC, either in PIE or via a 3rd party solution.

Other developers have mentioned that if they're not interested in creating Flash content to sell then the distribution kit is of no interest to them. If all you want to do is to view web sites in PIE that have Flash content or to view SWF files on your PPC that use a 3rd party solution then all you want is the free download.

As of today we are making the free Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC download available to developers again.
Here's a summary of what's transpired over the past week...

On October 3 we decided to remove the free Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC from our site for various reasons. After doing so, however, you—our developer community—let us know that you were not happy with the decision. You gave us your feedback by contacting us directly, expressing your opinions in our forums and other Pocket PC developer forums.

The developer community as a whole is very important to us, and it's essential for us to listen to your requests and provide the best resources and support we can to help you focus on expressing your ideas using our technologies.

You can read more about it here.

If you have any additional questions please contact me directly.

Best,

Subject: Standalone Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC

Dear all

Currently I am embarking on project managing a huge and worth while project using flash. The project is to produce 1500 short movies 1 or 2 seconds long of how to say (excuse the pun) technical ICT/IT terms in British Sign Language. The initial project is web based and follows on from www.artsigns.ac.uk and www.sciencesigns.ac.uk but importantly at my direction I have persuaded the project to run with flash.

We intend as a phased development of the project to store all 15000 signs on a SD card or similar and use in smart phone/PDA allowing user to input the word and then see the sign. A great tool for young and old deaf people working or more importantly training to work in it.

So be interested on your advice on how to proceed? Flash is a great product with some excellent accessibility and usability features built but without a free player??

I look forward to hearing from you.  I would like you to forward this onto your CEO Office and customer relations department and copy me in.

Yours in anticipation
Andy Black

Hi Andy Black

Who has been lurking in the forum for a while . Good forum got some really useful ideas already. My background is a reall mix ten years of teaching environmental conservation after a first degree in geography . Started using apple IIe and BBC micro's in the early 80's. Direct involvement with using technology to support learning whatever you want to call it for 8 years or so.

A long term interest in GIS and spatial aware features like geo blogging and great tools like buddy space. Grin

I work for British Education Communcations Technology Agency (Becta). But in my spare time am working on a handheld project putting British Sign language  for ICT terms in the form of flash movies onto PDA or SD card plans for 1500 signs that will nicely fit on a 1 Gb Sd card . Another one who isnt happy about pocket PC flashplayer not being availalble free !!

Got my own blog http://andysblackhole.blogspot.com

Also involved with Post 16 e-learning conference on 1,2nd November at GMEX in Manchester http://ferl.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=12583 Several stars from Handheld learning event are appearing there to and some interesting others.

Looking forward to the event next weekend hugely !!!
