1  Technology matters / Netbooks, UMPCs and Tablets / Re: Are laptops handheld? on: February 27, 2008, 08:02:40 PM
A really interesting question which, as Graham has said previously, the word "Handheld" should be a springboard for discussion and not a straightjacket. Even if we cannot agree about whether laptops are handheld we could always take a tablet? Smiley

I agree that the entry should be neither purely academic nor just commercial. However the academic/pedagogic/technological space should be the focus. Links to,and exploration of, the different perspectives and the tensions and synergy between them will be of enormous benefit to all.

However it is a responsibility for us all to ensure that there is a balance?

I think we can agree Graham(at last!) I am heavily involved with BSF with Toshiba and I think you are right. BSF is in danger of building schools of the past for the future!

To add to this issue I am pleased to see the handeld conference will have BSF as a theme. There is an interesting artcle " Adios to the 'old Skool' " in the nestafuturelab publication "vision" issue 02 2006  www.futurelab.org.uk

The danger is the BSF project is driven by the construction industry and, despite what it says on the P4S website, the transformative potential of ICT is not at the core of the planning process.
