Hi everyone,
Hello from Melbourne Australia.

Having used my own pda for 4 years, I'm keen to learn the ins and outs of running a class set.  As some of you may know, Australian schools (and Melbourne schools especially) have been at the forefront of laptop learning.  However pda use for students is still very much in its infancy here.

I'm just about to buy a class set of pdas as a trial for 6th grade students.  I've settled on a Palm pda but my burning question is:  how important is Documents to Go?  These pdas will have to last 3 years so I'm looking at a portable keyboard for each.  Initiallly I'd settled on the Zire 31 but that doesn't have DTGo.  I'm looking now at a Zire 72.  Is that too good for kids?  There's a good deal on with a portable keyboard included but is it worth the extra dollars.

 Any help gratefully received.

Hi Phil

Welcome to the forum Smiley

If you're going the Palm route and you have the finance I would definitely go for the Zire 72 - it's the best value and well give you the longest in-service life given the built in multimedia facilities thus giving students the ability to audio-visually record their work. Also I foresee a large growth in rich media applications being published for these platforms over the next 12 months (hint, hint) Wink A Windows Mobile device with similar spec would be more expensive.

I understand that you're Apple Mac based desktop wise. My experience of Documents to Go has been very poor on the Mac platform. The whole thing feels like a cludge and has wiped the PIM data on my Mac and Treo combination more than once so I'm assuming there's some kind of system mismatch here or an undocumented feature (legal term for 'bug'). Have you considered the Missing Sync from Mark/Space? I'm just starting to use it now.

I'm not even certain that running Word / Excel style apps on Palms are a good idea, have you checked the equivilents from GoKnow? The Docs to Go implementation of Powerpoint on Palm is a hoax by the way! Cheesy

Hope this helps

Have concerns about a) the reliability of Palm devices under the hammering students can give them and b) the interface D2Go uses. We are actually working with teacher training students and Tungsten W but they find D2Go frustrating (which may or may not lead to the number of times they are having to soft reset) and are rejecting the Palm devices.

Children may be better as they have not yet learned Windows functionality - the Dudley project uses Zire 72 - http://www.handheldlearning.co.uk/community/forum/index.php?topic=6.0. Suggest you contact someone to find out how they're doing.

Hi,,

I use a Zire 72 myself  and we have 30 out with students.
Problems- the paint comes off! With the ones the students have we've had one actual faulty one which was dead on arrival. (pda not student, though it can be difficult to....)  A few have been dropped but have survived (again I mean the PDAs...)

A few students claim the battery keeps going flat but any Ive looked at have been fine, So I'm still trying to get to the bottom of what is going on.

The Zire 72's ability to play MP3s and the inbuilt camera make the device worth carrying for students who have not yet realised how useful the device can be as an educational tool. On the other hand some schools ban cameras on site so that may be a problem.

DocsToGo I find very useful. More for carrying documents about than editing them, but the interface has been  improved on the version aimed at PalmOS 5 machines.

(Hi Jocelyn, Tunsten W is pre OS 5 so cannot run the most recent docs to go)

and the missing sync is a good product and the company are good for tech support if its needed.

Thankyou so much to the gurus re pda choice.  Your insights are very much valued.  The Dudley project is pretty much identical to what we intend to do in that each student will have the opportunity to take the pda home for a term.  I was looking at the silver Zire 72 but won't after I read the comment about the paint coming off.  D2Go took a hammering but we'll see - it'd be nice to have the option.  Had a look at the GoKbow apps and PAAM and this looks impressive as long as we don't have any firewall or network issues.

The camera will indeed be an issue as we have a ban on photo cameras - but heck, we haven't banned student digital still or video use Smiley.  Anyone know if it is possible to disable the camera function?  With the deal we have on here in Oz with a free keyboard thrown in with the Zire 72, it's cheaper than the Tungsten E at present.

I'll get my ugly boof head on a photo soon.

Graham, this is an impressive piece of software.  Thanks to Scott from NECC for the tip about this discussion forum.

Thanks again

Phil
