Hi,

Thinking of deployng the above within a hospital setting. Bigger screen than PDS but lightweigh and something that can easily be put in a bag and carried back and forth between school, hospital and hospital schooletc.
Anyoneactually  using the Samsung Q1 ultra moble PC within a classroom setting?

Comments please.

Robustness
Quality of screen
Ease of use
WLAN connectivity (802.11 a/b/g?)
Windows XP or Vista?
Min RAM spec.
Keyboard options
Warranty
Insurance etc.

Any help much appreciated.

Kind regards

Hi welcome to the forum,

Please read my evaluation of the Samsung Q1 on this forum site. The device is very interesting, but the current poor battery life and long boot up time are still an issue. Samsung are bringing out a new model which I am hoping to see at CeBit in a couple of weeks time. This has a solid state drive and is supposed to be a great improvement on the original. We shall have to wait and see.

Ths big problem, in using tablet PC's in hospitals, as I understood it, was around hygiene, ie. germs up yer ports and charging sockets!

Plus a Q1 would not fit into a Doctor type coat pocket!

I thought Toshiba and Fujitsu were among other companies looking at that issue. Bob Harrison of this forum would be a good person to ask.

Would hate to think that you had bought the devices only to have Matron ban them for Heath and Safety grounds.  Roll Eyes

Anyone actually  using the Samsung Q1 ultra moble PC within a classroom setting?

Hi Sambal

You could try Carol Webb, Director of e-Learning at Invicta Grammar School in Kent as they have been using PDA's, Tablet PC's and Samsung Q1's in classroom settings. Carol spoke at last years Handheld Learning Conference and presented some interesting and useful findings. You can contact Carol via the schools website:

http://www.invicta.kent.sch.uk/

Regarding Dave's comments above, which certainly hold true in many circumstances, you may wish to review them in light of possible announcements after the CeBiT trade show (March 15-21) as a number of UMPC manufacturers are likely to introduce their next generation devices. Handheld Learning will be going out this year and reporting back on anything relevant to this community.

Nothing stands still in technology but as Dave says from experience it's vital that the application or usage of the technology, i.e. the problem to be solved or purpose, is identified before choosing a solution, i.e. the device, and then don't underestimate the amount of training and support that will be required for teaching staff.

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Hi
we are planning to give every pupil one of the Q1b's in June.
We have been evaluating 3 Q1a's for the last 3 month's
Our findings are:
- Battery life (As already said) is bad but te Q1b's are promised (By Samsung) to be much better.
- some of the initial drivers are unstable but these are being updated.
- These are better has replacements for handouts so that pupils add their own notes on top of the existing notes.
- If you want pupils to create their own full essays then have access to USB Keyboards and Mice. Even better if they can plug in a full monitor.
- The devices work best with wireless environment with all the materials easily accessable via a class server
- The vioce recognition works very well with these devices and the pupils love it
- text recognition encourages the pupils to write neater so it can be recognised

Hi.

If you were to go for the Q1, or Q1b, I would recommend using them with the extended battery (this may now come free) and the battery bank.

The battery bank is basically a desk charger for several batteries at once. Very usefull for this environment.

For healthcare, it may also be worth looking at this new Intel solution, but the cost may be prohibitive.

Samsung have also got lots of experience in this field, so it's always worth a call.

My contact at Samsung is james.george@samsung.com - he is the man.

Cheers,

John.

Why don't you look at our product - the UM650. See attached.

Cheaper in price and comes with bundled goodies like T-mobile 3G Walk and Web product, wireless connectivity to The Cloud etc etc.
