Sony have released the next upgrade to their PSP firmware, version 2.80.
Amongst other things they have added video and rich media RSS (
Really Simple Syndication) to allow for vodcasts and podcasts to be downloaded to the device and held on the memory stick for later usage.
One of the challenges amongst current education handheld projects is how to distribute rich-media to each device without bringing the school network to a halt due to the size of the media files involved. Using RSS is a great solution as it allows the media to arrive on the device on a "trickle charge" basis at a pre-determined time - perhaps at night when the device is recharging, for example.
What's in the update? Well, as promised, Video RSS feeds are now included as a feature for those using RSS channels to track updates on audio and video from various websites. Any site that "podcasts" MP3 or PSP-compatible MP4 video over the web using RSS feeds can now be tapped and tracked on the PSP's browser. Also with this update, Sony has reconfigured the Music, Picture and Video folders (likely in preparation for the arrival and implementation of the PlayStation 3) so that they are no longer inside the PSP folder -- now, all of your multimedia lives on the root folder level, with only your PSP save games and downloads left in the simplified PSP folder. (For most PSP owners, this will be invisible in use.) A patch has also been placed on the LocationFree player support.
