Those of you wanting to experiment or make your own e-books that are compatible with Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC should download the Microsoft Word 2003 plug-in from the Microsoft site:

http://www.microsoft.com/reader/developers/downloads/rmr.asp

It's all pretty straight-forward and turns your word documents into well formatted e-books with cover graphics and a table of contents. Only works on a PC using Windows 2000, XP, etc.

There is a similar program for Palm OS and Pocket PC based devices called eBook Studio. It retails for about $30. Here is the link:

Of course, if you want more of a challenge, you could always use Dropbook:

It's free but a little bit more difficult to use.

We like the ReaderWorks program for creating LIT ebooks for Microsoft Reader.

Our favorite ebook program though is MobiPocket. This program has more features, including high res support (which eReader doesnt') and the files work on Palm or PPC. The best thing about MobiPocket is that it has the ability to create interactive ebooks with questions or other activities embedded right in the book. (See www.k12handhelds.com/curriculum on Sept. 8 for a sample of an interactive MobiPocket ebook.)
