Anyone got any views on whether you need rugged kit for student/ learner use?  And if so, when?  And how do the costs stack up?

Whenever I show people my XDA, Tungsten, Treo, tablet ( yes, I know, sad git) or whatever, and suggest it could be used for delivering learning the first response is often ' Yes, but that would never survive a pupil/copper/student/fireground/office/van '  And, yes, there are settings where you have to have rugged kit - crazy not to.

BUT

In trials of over 600 devices now (95% off the shelf kit)  I've seen 4 bust ( one in a loo, 2 stepped on and one reversed over).  Admittedly all of them were off the shelf kit.  Given the cost of rugged kit this one looks like a no brainer.

So, I reckon that for many situations ( outside the motorcycle cop sort of setting) the deal is this:

Explain it is not tough kit
Explain that the tough kit is twice the size and three times the weight to carry
Provide a decent case ( ie one which lives on the device not one thay have to take off all the time)
Accept that you will lose a few
Smile at the saving

I'm often convinced that the term 'rugged PDA' is regularly misquoted or misinterpreted. Any device with a touch sensitive display is inherently fragile. Watching in horror as my 2 year old son launched my Orange M2000 out of the patio door is a rather painful example of this.

At Chafford Hundred Campus, we have more than 350 Dell X30 and X50Vs in use. The key is ensuring that the students don'e take the device out of its case for normal use. The case on the X30 is a conventional hinged design and was extremely protective. The X50v (lovely bit of kit) however, has a flip case which for reasons best known to Dell, isn't protected along the sides of the device. So far, we've had two shattered screens (not bad with over 200 X50Vs doing the rounds) and these of course have to be replaced with new units. What can we really expect with children aged 11, 12 and 13? They are going to have mishaps.

Another problem is that 'rugged' mobile devices are often starved of features. I would NEVER sacrifice functionality for robustness. As the largest user of Pocket PCs in secondary education in the UK, I can solidly advise every practitioner out there to go for the best spec and the best CASE every time.
