Hi and welcome to the forum

As you've probably discovered handhelds come in all shapes and sizes as well as different operating systems (OS) but few actually run the same (OS) as their desktop equivalent .
So if you're used to using a Windows PC and want to run exactly the same software you would need to use something like a UMPC, e.g. Samsung Q1 Ultra, or you might want to consider some of the MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices) that are coming out from a number of manufacturers from September onwards and will be much cheaper. Handhelds running Windows Mobile 5 and above all have versions of Mobile Office which provides a level of compatibility between the Microsoft Office applications on a PC. Also, a bit bigger than handheld but you may want to check out the Asus EEE PC which is inexpensive and runs Open Office as well as having all the web browsing, skype, webcam, etc,
Then there's the Apple iPhone or iPod Touch. A bunch of applications are going to be appearing on these nifty handhelds in the coming months now Apple have opened it up to software developers.
What kind of things are you wanting to use on your handheld?
Cheers
G
