My CLC is running a primary EDA project using Fujitsu-Siemens EDAs.

We've set them all up with Syncroneyes so they can all be viewed by the teacher and so the pupils can share their work. However, when the units power down they lose the connection to SyncronEyes and drop off the screen. Does anyone know of a way to keep the wireless connection active even when the unit times out? The other option is to set the units so that they don't power down, but that means the battery barely lasts any length of time.

Hi Graham and welcome to the Forum!

Not sure I have answer to this one as I haven't used the set-up you describe. I suspect that the SyncronEyes PDA/EDA client software doesn't automatically wake-up and re-assert it's connection to the host PC. You're right that keeping the EDA's on constantly would solve the problem but , as you say, at the expense of battery life.

Have you reported this concern to the developers of SyncronEyes, i.e. Smart Technologies? Perhaps they have an update.

Let us know how you get on as I can imagine other users may have similar problems.

Thanks for the reply, Graham.

The HTC Advantages that we also have for other projects gives the option of keeping the wireless connection even when the unit goes into powersaving mode. I can't find any such option for the EDAs. I'll certainly contact Smart to see if they've come across this problem before.

Graham,

Can I suggest you try using the legacy FSC software ConnectMobility-E2C, this application allows you to setup a WLAN profile that can also hold VPN, TCP-IP (Fixed IP), DNS/WINS and Proxy setting but more importantly you can set the WLAN to reconnect automatically to that profile after it resumes from power save or after being switched off.
click here to find a quick guide to setting up the EDA wireless.  Grin
I would also check that the WLAN power save mode is set to Disable, this should be already set to this as it is a factory default but worth checking.  Wink Hope this helps with your issue.

Hi Matt,

We've been using ConnectMobility-E2C as installed on the EDAs and supplied by Steljes. It's interesting that the Fujitsu-Siemens site you gave the link to reccomends deleting the program!

Not sure how to set the WLAN to reconnect automatically or how to check/change the WLAN power setting. Any help would be appreciated.

Graham,

Hmmm  Huh I think the suggestion to delete the software is IMO not the best option but a handfull of sites have had issues with it.  Roll Eyes I have used it every day on multipule sites with no issues at all, and even fixed connection issues using it.  Cool
 
  • To enable "Automatic Reconnection" in E2C hold the WLAN icon (bottom left in E2C) and a list of options will appear, select Automatic Reconnection from this list.
  • To change WLAN power save navigate to Start/Settings/WLAN power and at the bottom in the WLAN Power save mode section select Disable.

Hi Graham,

Most mobile devices are built to save power, and many of the default settings do just that.... but for running Synchroneyes that is exactly what you do not want.

So there are settings on the device that you will need to alter to make it run effectively.

Also we have has best results with the teacher laptop (Obvioulsy connected to the IWB) plugged into the network by wire.

I know it's been a while but I just thought I'd update you as to the situation with the EDAs. Eventually an engineer came up and re-imaged the units using an image he'd successfully used on another project. This seems to have sorted out the problems with Synchroneyes. We're still not happy with the dreadful battery life (even with just basic functions being used) and are taking a look at what we can replace them with for the next school year.

Hi Graham,

Glad that you have had your devices re imaged and that synchroneyes is working fine.

One thing that we have not had a problem with using the EDA's is poor battery life.

We have been running nearly 1000 devices for over a year and this has not been an issue.

Are your learners closing down running applications. try using magic button.
