Dixons are already selling the Palm OS based games machine, Tapwave by Zodiac at a reduced price of £150 from an original selling price of £250.

Get 'em while they're still in business I say!

Given that the Nintendo DS just turned up for £99 what must the people at Zodiac have been thinking?

Errrr... hello guys, have you heard of the education sector? drop the tapwave to £99 and you'll sell them by the lorry load!

Why not just download a bunch of Atari and Gameboy emulators for your Palm or PPC here

Wow! STOP PRESS Smiley

As advertised in this weeks Private Eye, you can get the Tapwave Zodiac 1 at warehouse surplus outlet Morgan for £82.24 (inc VAT). That's a really good price for a landscape screened Palm OS device with 32Mb RAM and dual SD card slots, MP3 audio, Bluetooth and all the other stuff.

I've just had a look at Morgan computers and I just couldn't find the special offer.  Was it in their bargain basement?

It was advertised on the backpage of Private Eye a few weeks ago and I picked up a Zod 2 from the New Oxford Street branch over the counter.

I genuinely hate to be wrong about these things but alas Tapwave, the makers of the Palm based Zodiac games handheld have gone belly-up.

The message on their website (http://www.tapwave.com/index.html) today states:

Quote

We are sorry to inform you that the Zodiac business was discontinued and service and support are no longer available as of July 25th 2005.

Resources that may still be helpful to you can be found at http://www.tapwave.com/resources and http://www.tapwave.com/support. This includes links to websites where you can find a variety of useful tips and information as well as purchase e-books, Audible books and magazines, Palm OS applications, Zodiac skins, and third party Tapwave Certified games.

Additional products, acessories, and game cards may still be available from COMPUSA, Fry's, and J&R while supplies last.

We thank you for your past interest and support and apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused. If you have an outstanding claim with the company, Ueker and Associates will be contacting you shortly.

Sincerely,
The Tapwave Team

Going up against the likes of Nintendo or Sony was always going to be an impossible task regardless of how good the Zodiac devices were. One can only wonder how the Windows Mobile powered Gizmondo will fair?

It's really a pity, given there is a market of 1.5 billion school children in the world, that companies like Tapwave, Gizmondo, etc invest their 10's of millions in marketing budgets and developing hardware/software to compete in the handheld games industry when if they'd changed their target and strategy ever so slightly they could have revolutionised learning and potentially stolen the games market from underneath Nintendo and Sony's feet.

Hello? Anybody out there listening???
