Support from Mobile Phone Companies

Hi
I wonder whether you have the same experience as we have when trying to get the phone companies interested in education. We have bought 45 XDA PDAs from a well-known company (think England rugby team, Arsenal football team) and have data only contracts. They are very reluctant to give us any special deals and seem to treat us (a university eucation department) just the same as a business company. The fact that our trainees are taking the PDAs into school and showing them to teachers and students does not seem to register. There is a whole new market out there which they do not seem keen to penetrate (to use the jargon - sorry
. Is it the same with all the other companies?

Oh to be with another company perhaps...
My experiences with a different company were similar.
What I did discover is that the mobile phone company who provides the network is not in fact the company who supplies you with the mobile phone service, even if they have the same name.
Carphonewarehouse Vodafone for example is not the same as Vodafone.co.uk Vodafone.

I have a good relationship with my supplier but a poor one with Vodafone - not their fault I am constantly opening and closing contracts - they need advance notice and their systems have difficulty keeping up with me. However, there are a couple of people at Staffordshire, Richard Dunnill; Clyde Redfern, and Simon Hughes from Canterbury Christ Church working on another TDA project, some of whom wangled free hardware for their ITT trainees on O2 Best for Business contracts.
My problem is that while phone costs are so high the admin involved in keeping track of who owes what is actually impinging on the success of the project. I would dearly like support from cell phone companies - it will take years for schools and teachers' homes to become seamlessy wirelessly networked - though apparently, they are currently concerned with recovering their 3G investment costs

I agree that the administration can be time-consuming and a problem. We have 45 pdas and so 45 contracts and so every month I get 45 invoices, though I can pay them as one invoice. We have a data only contract and now the trainees are using the PDA properly and not running upbills for voice calls. We had a few 'rogues' at the start who were using the PDA as their own phone and we billed them and they soon got the message. There is software available on the O2 site to help manage the accounts but I have not had the time to use it. The worst offender for running up bills is a member of the staff who loans a PDA - we have only had to disconnect one student so far. I have been promised admin support but am still waiting.

we are running a handheld project in wandsworth and have had excellent support from definitely tmobile. they are definitely aware of the implications of the education market for handheld technology and have been invaluable for our project. they have excellent OGC data tarriffs and have all sorts of useful ways in which they can provide support. we are focussing on utilising the 3G network so that we can provide equal access to connectivity for all students 24/7 and are currently developing platforms to utilise this capacity in the classroom. If you would like a contact with t-mobile or want to know more about our project please don't hesitate to get in contact with me.

Hi
Wondering if supplied handsets are the way to go? I realise that cost is an issue but many students already have powerful mobile devices of their own. So perhaps we need to be looking at using these and supplying handsets to those who cannot afford it?
If we work with a particular handset and service provider then we end up with specific solutions, which will not be transferable to other devices. We've seen this before with the "desktop web" where developers assume everyone is using Windows and IE as their browser. Given the explosion of devices at the moment and the rapid rate of change don't we need to shift to a "device agnostic" approach and exploit what is already available?
I certainly think bringing in the service providers into the equation is very important and it would be good to see at least one or two sponsoring next years Handheld Learning. However, the pressure to change costs need to be brought across the mobile network providers.
In terms of connectivity things seems to be changing, there are better pricing models coming out, which allow higher data usage but they still have some way to go. Encouragingly though, we are seeing more devices with Wifi and bluetooth built in, these offer cheaper (sometimes negligible) costs to access data.
