A press release on the
PalmSource site
SUNNYVALE, Calif., February 1, 2005 — PalmSource Inc., (NASDAQ: PSRC) provider of Palm OS®, a leading operating system powering next generation phones and mobile devices, today announced the availability of Java Technology for Palm OS® Garnet, a WebSphere™ Everyplace Micro Environment (WEME) Java™ 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) certified runtime environment, for the Treo™ 650 smartphone and Tungsten™ T5 handheld from palmOne, Inc. IBM's WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment (WEME) Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) certified runtime environment provides the technology needed to enable standards-based mobile Java applications to run on Palm Powered™ smart mobile devices.
It's not really clear what this means for users and developers although in theory it means that Palm OS devices might end up having built-in support for applications written in Java which is a very popular cross-platform language for mobile devices. To date Palm OS devices have had this capability anyway via third party plug-ins from companies like Sun Microsystems.
My feeling is that whilst it's nice to have access to more applications a Java application doesn't look or feel like a Palm application which therefore presents potential support issues.
