Note: The Official Handheld Learning 2006 website is now live at www.handheldlearning.co.uk/hl2006

Preliminary information prior to the dedicated Handheld Learning 2006 website which will be online on May 4th.

in association with

After last years successful event and the large number of active projects now under way across the UK, Europe, US, Australia, Africa and the rest of the World we are preparing for another large turn out. Many of you will remember that last year we ran out of places and had to turn away over 100 delegates due to capacity limitations. So this year our annual conference will be taking place at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Westminster, London on October 12-13th, where we will be able to manage a capacity of more than 400 people.

Just a quick update:

• Look out for our first adverts for the event and formal call for papers, exhibitors and patrons in the Times Educational Supplement and Time Higher Education Supplement on May 5th

• In addition to the main hall (capacity 700), we have four break-out rooms with AV support catering for group sizes between 30 and 75 available in the afternoons for both days. It would be great if members of our community would come up with some valuable use for these spaces, e.g. Special Interest Groups, practical hands-on, tutorials, etc.

• Exhibitors in the delegates lounge and Patrons have the use of a 75 seat theatre with AV support for commercial presentations.

More updates to follow

Thanks!

I'm pleased to announce that Professor Stephen Heppell will also be delivering what is sure to be a thunderous and rousing keynote with his vision of the future for handheld learning at our conference.

I've known Stephen for more than 20 years and if the truth be known he's probably one of the key reasons for what I'm doing today in that he inspired me with visions for how ICT could genuinely have a profound and positive impact on teaching and learning.

We both participated in an event in 1989 that, the then nascent, Ultralab organised called "Education 2010". Looking back over those notes it's surprising how close we were not just about the technology, afterall that was the easy bit, but also how society would develop and view teaching and learning. It certainly stuck in my mind and for those who haven't enjoyed hearing Stephen at full throttle you are in for a treat Smiley

More about Stephen may be found here: http://rubble.heppell.net/heppell/biog.html

Thanks to everyone spreading the word we're getting a lot of registrations for this conference which is on course for being another excellent gathering of minds with some real experience to share.

More speakers will be announced over the next couple of weeks but in the meantime we're delighted to announce that Anne Bishop, Director of Research & Development at Wake Forest University (WFU) will be presenting a paper. WFU have been consistently working at the forefront with handhelds from the development of their ClassInHand quizzing and voting system that works with a variety of projection systems to the MobileU project that sort to fully integrate Pocket PC smartphones within the University campus. The MobileU project has recently been nominated as a ComputerWorld magazine finalist in the "Innovation and Promise" category of ComputerWorld magazine's "Best Practices in Mobile & Wireless" awards. Congrats!
