Gosh, this rumour has been going on for so long now and it's inevitable given that you can even play full length feature films on a pretty average spec handheld but it seems the grand daddy of the mp3 players is edging towards a video version real soon now...

Here's a story from the San Francisco Chronicle

Speculation that Apple Computer Inc. may soon start selling an iPod that plays digital videos got a boost on Monday with reports the firm is negotiating with recording companies to license their music videos.

Apple, which is looking for the next big hit to complement its hugely successful online iTunes Music Store and iPod portable music player, has been in talks with EMI Recorded Music, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, according to news reports.

Here's something along similar lines from Archos which is a personal multimedia player that plays video, audio, pictures, etc but also has PIM functions and Wi-Fi capability.

The Archos PMA430 wants to be the only gadget you have to carry. While it looks like some sort of media player, it's really a tiny Linux PC focused on audio, video and personal information management.
That means the PMA 430 leverages the power of Linux to do a lot of things, including connecting to the Internet wirelessly. However, while powerful and versatile, the PMA430 does have its downsides, as inevitably seems to be the case with jack-of-all-trades devices. And, at a hair under $800 (that’s list price; we found it online at press time for $629), all this power comes at a price.

Now if Apple did an iPod update with video and Wi-Fi (and VoIP) we'd have the new Apple handheld computer Smiley
