I was wondeing if anyone has come across any software to help students with wrting academic essays, referencing, report writing, summary writing and other academic activities in English.

My choice would be Inspiration for Handhelds by www.inspiration.com. It's not only a powerful mindmapping tool, but can be transformed into a word document where students can add as much text as necessary.

I've experimented with a 30-day free trial and was very pleased.
