Derek Robertson and I will be running a couple of sessions at this years Edinburgh Interactive Festival running from Sunday 10th to Tuesday 12th August.
During the main conference on the 11th at 12:30 - 13:00 we're taking a new look at how off the shelf games are being used for powerful learning experiences inside and outside of the classroom whilst the "serious games" industry is still looking for the door marked "ENTRY". With an audience mainly comprised of videogame developers and publishers our argument is that they shouldn't try to create educational software but let good teachers pull out rich learning experiences from the material already within a compelling game.
On the morning of the 12th we are running an all morning session entitled "Gaming in Education" starting at 09:30 that is FREE for anyone to attend. I'll be chairing (I guess this makes me the Bez of the industry) with Derk presenting an overview of the work being conducted in by LTS in Scotland, Anna Rossvoll will present her work with Nintendogs in primary, Kim Applin will show their work with Endless Ocean, Susan Yeoman will demonstrate a number of game based learning activities and Ian Harper will be showing his work with Inanimate Alice. This will all be followed up with an audience and panel discussion that will be joined by Euan Mackenzie (3MRT), Matt Sweeney (TPLD), Alan Mills (SSAT) and Judy Robertson (Herriot Watt).
It promises to be an excellent and stimulating session so you'll need to get there early as there are limited seats available. Did I mention that the Tuesday morning session was FREE?
