Becta have commissioned a landscaping study looking at the prevalence, scope and impact of mobile assessment across all sectors of learning.

This work covers the use of mobile devices to support all types of assessment, whether formative, summative or e-portfolio evidence gathering.  The researchers would like to hear from anyone who is using mobile technologies for learning with any assessment element.

The report from this research at the end of March will support Becta’s wider work on mapping the landscape for next generation learning.

If you have information which you feel would be of use to support this exploration of mobile assessment projects, researchers Roger Merritt (roger.merritt@dsl.pipex.com) and Amanda Black (amanda.black@virgin.net) would be delighted to hear from you for a short email or phone conversation.

Hi Roger and welcome to the forum!

You'd be advised to contact either Professor Richard Kimbell or Tony Wheeler of TERU at Goldsmiths College who are now in the 3rd phase of a handheld based assessment project called e-scape. This phase is funded by Becta (Neil Mclean is the Becta lead) with engagement with the QCA and a number of the awarding bodies.

Phase 2 was based around GCSE level assessment for Design and Technology. More information here:
http://www.handheldlearning.co.uk/content/view/34/60/

Phase 3 is based on Science and Geography using smart phones. Handheld Learning's Cambridge research team and the MAPS e-portfolio team at TAG Learning have been working together to create a software framework built on a set of application programming interfaces (API's) between RedHalo and MAPS (Managed Assessment Portfolio System)

Good hunting and please come back and share what you find!

Hi Roger
It would be great to hear more about this project and perhaps see some of the research.
We at m-learning.mobi are looking at a similar sounding project for trainee teachers together with Roehampton Univeristy, with a particular focus on evidence gathering.
