Just wondering what the general feelings were within the community about,
Virtual parental involvement within the classroom or educational environment..
I am really interested in communications between parents and teachers / educators.

Does  parent communication have a positive effect for students.
What would the best method of communication be for a parental contact.
What barriers are there affecting the communication of parents with educators.

What are peoples feelings about email or IM based communication portal and does anyone know of any being tested or any alternatives??

Although early days yet, we are using a learning platform (whatever that currently means - I'll leave the semantics to others) to give children virtual workspaces but also to allow parents access to selected parts of it, depending on the school. Some schools also have a parent specific area where they are directed to relevant school documentation, information, children's work and weblinks. As yet we have not used the space to directly engage the parents in dialogue/interaction but it may be not too far away in terms of voicing opinion on school issues...however...there is a can of worms just waiting to be opened...

From a personal point of view, I have to say I like email, because it gives me a chance to be in touch with my children's teachers without having to play phone tag, or worse yet, send written notes to school. I'm not sure that at this point in time, given the structure of formal education, real-time communication tools such as IM would be effective, and I believe that when teachers are teaching, they shouldn't be distracted with IM's from parents.

Communication between parents and teachers is a crucial part of a child's education, both from a teacher's and a parent's perspective. Asynchronous digital communication such as email seems to work well. As far as real time contact goes, f2f is still the best.

The development of learning platforms should enable parents to login to any given platform and see realtime information regarding their children including results, portfolio access and internal messages between parents-teachers-students.
Perhaps RSS could make this process more efficient and as LP's develop - mobile access for both students and parents would enable discussions outside the barriers of the school gates involving parents within the learning process armed with real time information about their childrens attainment, efforts and awareness of learning behavior.
Perhaps this leads to a wider discussion of schools responsibilities to engage with parents to ultimately enable shared ownership of learning, to enhance home-school links and ultimately ensure all skateholders in a given students learning are informed sufficiently to personalise learning and tailor processes experiences to suit learners needs.
