1  For learners and educators / Teaching for mobile learners / Re: Hero Innovators - Tell us your story on: October 28, 2008, 06:13:41 AM
This means anyone using mobile phones in their teaching instead of banning them - come on folks!

Here is my collection of information to do just that!

http://switchedon.wikispaces.com/

Yes, we have educators in my building that are letting students use cell phones and anything else in their pocket of technology.

" If students only view their technology as toys banned from school, then how can we ever get them to explore their powerful educational potential?"
2  For learners and educators / Teaching for mobile learners / Re-Thinking the Ink Pen - Livescribe Pulse on: October 28, 2008, 06:08:33 AM
Have you seen the Livescribe Pulse smart pen ?    http://www.livescribe.com/

- It records what you write digitally (I know not new)
- It records what you hear when you are writing (kinda cool)
- It SYNCS the AUDIO with the WRITING !!!! -  (way cool)

You can play back the audio that took place when you made your hand written notes.  You can post your video of the session for online sharing.

QUESTION:
- How do you think this can be used in your classroom?
- Could it reach a different kind of learner ?

We may need a new forum category for "smart pens".  Smiley

I would love to attend, but need some help.  If traveling from the USA, what advice could you give for:
- travel
- lodging
- meals
- sight seeing
- cost

Anyone from the US care to share what they spent on their last trip from the US to HHL ?

No problem.  I first saw this when one of my students connected his PSP to a classroom's LCD projector to demo his engineering project.  He had his powerpoint converted and video of his design in action.  Here is a podcast of how to videos you can download onto your PSP:

7  Technology matters / iPod & media players / iPod Touch makes a house call on: January 14, 2008, 06:13:02 PM
I helped one of my students modify a $25 iPod mic from Walmart so he could use his iPod touch as a phone.

We followed the following article:
http://touchmods.wordpress.com/page/2/
Look in the middle titled "The trick with the Walmart iVoice III"
Also checked youTube videos.

He later used his Touch to connect to an online phone service and called his cell phone !

Here is an article on how to build a cell phone:

Now, can someone tell me how to build a "provider" ?

Just a video output cable for your PSP and connect accordingly.   Next time you have to present, consider using a PSP or iPod to manipulate your content.

I have a vision of how cell phones could be a useful tool in school, here is what it is like:

One device needed to bring phones under the guidance of education would be this "box".

- The "box" would produce the school's own phone signal, much like the major telecom companies provide.
- The "box" would function, just like a school's infrastructure, providing the connection to school resources, teachers, and fellow students.
- When a student enters the building, the phone would need to be switched to the school provider network.
- The school phone network would allow students to call each other (under moderation) and connect to the INTERNET.
- Blue tooth in the building would push content to a student as they pass points in the building (thanks to Darren Atkinson for that idea!)
- Since the student would be on the school phone network, they could not use the device for outside calls.

If this "box" could function as a phone company and allow users to connect, then educators could use the computer powered pockets of almost all the youth!
- Teach the student that a cell phone is an educational tool, not an annoyance.

So who wants to make the "box" ? Cisco are you reading this ? ...  Grin

The phones will someday do more,
- projectors and perhaps a laser light keyboard ??

11  Technology matters / Entertainment consoles / 2007 Indiana Tech Conference on PSP on: December 03, 2007, 02:34:06 AM
Well, we just finished the 2007 HECC conference and gave out almost 700 PSPs .  It was a great honor to visit with Darren Atkinson of Edunova and get to know such a gentleman!  You Brits were well represented and I hope to someday get to the Handheld Conference.  I also owe a great deal of thanks for David @ SUMS who helped us show their fantastic mathematic software.  I look forward to continuing my new friendships.  Thanks again for hosting the premiere handheld site on the net!  More details of the conference to come.

- I had the privilege of teaching 85 people in one room how to use the PSP.  I am sure it will be awhile before anyone will ever see almost 700 PSPs in use in one building !  Love my job !  Grin

My students are using the new slim PSP and a video cable connected directly to an LCD projector.
13  For learners and educators / Teaching for mobile learners / Re: Powerpoint on a PSP on: November 13, 2007, 03:01:41 PM
My students have had good success.  Check out their "how to videos" at:

http://pspedu.blogspot.com

You can click the RSS feed to download to your PSP !

They now are playing with their new PSP cams.  Any good sites to upload the videos that they are making on the PSP ?  Youtube type sites take awhile to load due to all the images on the front page.  Any better sites?
14  For learners and educators / Teaching for mobile learners / Powerpoint on a PSP on: October 29, 2007, 05:52:02 PM
Anyone had good experience showing a powerpoint on a PSP ?

My students are converting slides to jpegs and flipping through with good success and are converting the show to a video, but still struggling.

Any tips?

I hope to upload a video soon of the student presenting his assignment with a PSP.

If we can get our USA distribution sorted in time, maybe we could give away a free copy with every one of your free PSPs ....

Please contact me.  This conference would be a great place to showcase your products and pick up a Midwest distributor.
