When using file explorer to access shared folders on a 2003 server has anyone:-

a) been able to connect directly to a folder within a share, ie \\server\homeshare\student folder when using share and file permissions on the folders - i can only get it to connect as a path to the share itself.
b) "map" a path so that it is remembered as a drive letter
c) is there any way of opening files on the remote shares rather than having to copy the files locally to the pda first, we have mpg videos we want them to watch as "streams" rather than download.

For performing share, one solution, although a sledgehammer to crack a nut, might be Resco File Explorer:

For streaming mpeg video you might look at PocketTV:

Performing shares was a bit easier under Pocket PC 2003 - anybody figured an easy way with WinMob 5?

I prefer to stick with Windows Media Player to stream videos to WM5 devices from a web link, although a similar scheme works for RealMedia (and i presume for mpeg3 also to the RM player):

1. On the webpage, create your link to a text file; let's call it test.asx

2. The text file contains the ASX instructions for the streaming Windows Media server:

<ASX version ="3">
   <entry>
      <ref HREF="mms://server.deacnet.wfu.edu/chemistry/test.wmv"/>
   </entry>
</asx>

3. The media file, called test.wmv, is then stored on the streaming server, which is called "server" in this example. The file is set for "Read" and "Read & Execute" permission for "Everyone" in Windows security tab in File Properties.

I have made streaming videos for Laptop computers of some advanced chemistry (3rd-year University-level) for my students, capturing my TabletPC and voice-over using Camtasia by TechSmith. As a test, I re-rendered some of the videos for PocketPC to see how readable they were. Results are at
