Possible discussion subject.......

Whilst it is good that the information is actually on Palms site, its worrying that it needs to be there at  all!!

Palm arent alone, I am finding the stability of newer PDAs leaves a lot to be desired.  We've all been conditioned for years by the computing industry  to put up with software that was flakey and buggy....Now it looks like hardware manufacturers are joining in...

I agree on the "bugginess" (is this a word) of new devices.  My Dell Axim x50v locks up (won't turn on) when I turn it off and the built in Wi-Fi is still active (but not every time, more likely when it has been turned off and the back on at least once).  Requires a removeal of the battery to restart.  It has the latest ROM installed.

I think its interesting that (In Palms case) the reset button used to be under a very small hole in the back of  the case, requiring a paper clip or the special tool accessed by unscrewing the end of the stylus....

Now the reset button is quite a big button on the back that you can just use your stylus for.... My proporta case even has a cut-out to allow access to the button.....

Cynically I wonder how long before a PDA  has a reset button on the front instead of one of the application buttons.! Most PC's have one and we all just put up with it and expect to need it.

Its not just the hardware thats got worse. There appear to have been substancial bug fixes released for
the LifeDrive not long after its release. Hey PalmOne, did you bother actually testing this thing first?

In the case of the Zire72 there were bugs in the first release that are still there regarding security, Palms answer, go buy a third party security application. Glad to know they take these things seriously.

(Hi Graham how about a separate "have a rant" section of the Forum)

I spoke with a Dell Windows Mobile rep today at NECC (in Philadelphia, PA, USA) and they "do not know anything about that."  He suggested I call tech support (and waste several minutes, if not hours, of my life on hold).  I'll end up doing it because I don't know if this may be the surface of some deeper problem or not.  However, I agree w/ you that the reset on the front is probably not far behind!

Perhaps we could start a world wide campaign to put new technology production on hold for a while, to let everything else catch up and give developers (of hard and software) a chance to fix everything first?  Undecided

We're all being forced to turn into 'technology apologists' (was that the phrase Jon?) these days. I'm starting to get fed up of having to apologies to colleagues for the technology on the one hand, whilst encouraging them to use it on the other Embarrassed

The attitude of big corporations is really not good enough. The idea that they just say, effectively, "Tough, chuck it in the bin, wait til the new one comes out then spend even more money on buying that.." is really appalling. I accept there is a balance between not stifling creativity in new technology, and many of us wanting to get our hands on the latest thing asap, but how does the punter-on-the-street cope when all their technology goes wrong, or is the general populace more robust than I give credit for? (or is it causing even greater divides between those who use and those who don't?!?!?)

Hmmmmm.
