Anyone out there found a half decent tool for concept mapping on the eeePC?

Ive found a few but they are quite big 60-100MB and rather more than we need to do simple stuff.
Need something more than a drawing package though

Java based would be nice (I dont think I ever imagined a day would ever come when  I actually said that)

While you're waiting for the open source version of RedHalo/Activity you might like to look at Exploratree which is an online concept mapping tool that is free to use at:

http://www.exploratree.org.uk/

I recently so it being put to good effect by pupils at Radstock Primary School.

It's a development from Futurelab funded with some wonga from Microsoft as part of their Enquiring Minds project (or was that Acquiring Minds?)  Roll Eyes

Jon,

May I ask about your CMAP install?

What I downloaded from IHMC was a zipped .bin file that I think was generated by InstallAnywhere.  Presumably, all I have to do is double click this bin file on my EEEPC (where?) and I will have an installation of CMAP. But since this is nonstandard installation method for EEEPC, I'm a little concerned about where the installer has put the files, and how will I *undo* this if I need to. (I am using my EEEPC in its initial simple mode with a few big icons etc.)

(Or has IHMC repackaged CMAP as a .deb or a xandros package?)

Thank you for your suggestions.

Regards,

Owen

Thanks for the pointer, I'll have a look. But I must say that I'm a real fan of CMAP. IHMC has (I think) spent a lot of grant money and time developing CMAP, and it shows. For good or ill, I think CMAP is also used at DARPA, as I think it was their grant money.

At IHMC the software is developed by the same team that developed the associated learning theory. The result is that the tool is robust and the underlying paradigm is also sturdy. It was a couple of years ago, but at that time CMAP was miles ahead of MindMap, (though they address slightly different purposes).

I'm no expert on the state-of-the-art in knowledge capture tools, so the same capability may exist in these other tools that have been mentioned. And it may also be that these other tools better address child/youth learning. I can say that CMAP has been very helpful to me in capturing and articulating complex ideas to others (for example, in formulating a patent).

Long story short, I'm still interested to get CMAP on my EEE PC  Smiley

Thanks and Regards,

Owen
