1  Technology matters / Phones and PDAs / Nokia N97 on: December 02, 2008, 11:22:42 AM

Nokia have announced their new n series phone, the N97.

The N97 isn’t a device that will trigger knee-jerk hysteria, but instead it should breed cool-headed excitement at the prospect of a new era of mobile experience.

It may be an Nseries handset, but the N97 carves a new space in the otherwise blurred realm between smartphone and laptop - a product built on a foundation of rock solid mobile principles, Nokia innovations, and tangible new technologies, pushed to the extreme and embodied in a slimline pocket shell.

I think it has potential, be interesting to see how it works in the real world.

My thoughts.

2  Technology matters / Netbooks, UMPCs and Tablets / e-Learning Stuff Podcast #006 - You say Asus and I say Asus… on: November 26, 2008, 10:26:57 AM
I thought members of this forum may be interested in a podcast we recorded on the Asus EeePC.

In this show, James is joined by Nick Jeans, Kev Hickey, Dave Foord, David Sugden and Lisa Valentine.

The discussion starts off looking at the role of the Asus EeePC and other netbooks on e-learning on colleges across the UK. The discussion also looks at the variety of presentation software now available from PowerPoint to Keynote, Open Office to Google Docs. Then there is other stuff as well…

3  General Area / News & Events / Mobile internet usage on the rise on: November 26, 2008, 10:24:29 AM
BBC reports on the fast growth of mobile internet usage.

Mobile internet use is growing while the number of people going online via a PC is slowing, analyst firm Nielsen Online has found.

Some 7.3m people accessed the net via their mobile phones, during the second and third quarters of 2008.

This is an increase of 25% compared to a growth of just 3% for the PC-based net audience - now more than 35m.

One thing which the survey also found was:

It also found that the mobile net audience was younger and searched for different things.

What this demonstrates is that our learners will be (or already are) using mobile devices to search for things on the internet.

Our learners will also as a result be more likely to utilise their mobile devices to access college web services, so we should ensure that ours are accessible from a mobile device.

 Grin

Well it has been found.

I am suspecting that one of the little people in my house moved it, because I found it in a bag I know I didn't take to London with me.

All's well though.

Just going through my bag of gadgets over the weekend, I think I may have mislaid an iPod touch (in a plastic case) at the Handheld Learning Conference last week.

I was wondering if anyone had picked it up or if it had been handed in?

It has an asset number/barcode on the back.

Thanks

EDIT: I was just composing this when Graham posted my video, thanks Graham...

I really enjoyed the conference and got a lot out of it.

Only real downside for me was there was too much I wanted to see and hear and didn't get to everything I wanted to.

Nice to see the videos from HHL already up on Blip.tv

http://handheldlearning.blip.tv/

Means I can catch David's closing Keynote which I missed as I booked my train too early after misreading the programme.

Steve's reflective post was good.

I liked the way it was used subversively at the conference with delegates using it to chat during sessions and keynotes.

I know that a few people made new friends using it, which was nice.

I wasn't sure that this was going to work, but in the end it was excellent and one of my real highlights at the conference.

Mark Kramer very kindly filmed mine and broadcast it using Qik.

I hope that the Pecku Ketchup is repeated next year.

Word to the wise...

Make sure you get a front row seat for the Industry Announcements at the HHL Conference on Tuesday morning at 09:30

Can I just say that the T-Mobile announcement was rather disappointing...

;-)

However I was able to get my hands on a real G1 the following day.

Thoughts are here.

I need to remember when doing the d hhl thing that I have only about 130 characters, as a few of my tweets have been truncated.

Seems to be working.

Or Gabcast your 6' 40" and then be available by phone for questions.

Popped into my local T-Mobile store to ask about the G1.

It will be released and available on 1st November.

I asked about upgrading and was told that it would not be possible until January due to T-Mobile's financial year.

Wonder if I can get a review phone...

That looks interesting, I'll be there.
