NECC 2005 - Philadelphia, PA
«
on:
January 26, 2005, 07:37:17 PM »
Just curious, how many people plan on attending NECC in Philadelphia this year (June 27-30, 2005)? I have meet some great international guest there (especially in 2002 at San Antonio, TX and last year at New Orleans, LA). It is always interesting to see what folks from other places are doing in education. Always seems to be a big contingent from Australia there.

Hi Scott,
You know I'll be there!! I am taking part in two panels on handheld computers (see below). Also, for those of you who may not know, Elliot Soloway, Cathie Norris and I are trying to start a handheld computing SIG for ISTE. The proposal will be voted on this month so keep your fingers crossed. I will let everybody know what the outcome of the vote is when I hear about it. If you are going to be at NECC, I hope to see you there.
Mark

Hi all,
I was just notified that ISTE has agreed to let us form a special interest group for handheld computing. Since ISTE is an international organization, I hope many of you who are not in the US will get involved. i'll provide updates on this forum, but for now we are planning on being very visible at NECC in June.

Mark,
Any idea if the formation of the SIG will have an impact on the number of handheld sessions at next year's conference? Last year's representation was weak at best. Handheld sessions were extremely overcrowded. I don't know if this year will be any better. I did not get my proposal for a session approved. I am hoping I get the birds-of-a-feather for Pocket PCs accepted.

Scott,
A cursory search turned up quite a bit, don't know about the quality though. The SIG will have a business meeting on Tuesday June 28 (4:45-6:15) followed by the SIG reception. I hope to see many of you there. I'll post more info as it becomes available. I'm not sure what type of an impact our SIG will have on future conferences with regards to handheld sessions, although I know we will actively lobby for more. Maybe we can get some kind of special strand.

Just got e-mail verification that I am hosting "Birds-of-a-Feather" discussion group on Using Pocket PC in K-12 Education. It will be on Wednesday, 6/29/2005 from 4:45pm– 5:45pm. Please feel free to come and join in the discussion.
Sounds like the SIG meeting and/or reception afterward might be a good time for those attending to join up and introduce our selves to each other. I concur with the special strand Mark. There are still far too few sessions on handhelds, and of those that are the predominance is on Palms. I would like to see a few more on the PocketPC.

I'd be more than happy to do a session on the projects that are happening in the UK handheld-wise if that's required
I'm currently working on 3 pilot schemes and developing new software.

Another plug for NECC and the Pocket PCs in Education Session on:
Wednesday, June 29, 2005 from 4:45-5:45 (Philadelphia Time) in Room PACC 112 A
I have two copies of the brand new concept mapping software (can't give the name yet as it hasn't been officially released) for the Pocket PC, as attendance prizes, and am hoping to acquire some additional items.
I would love to have all the members of the forum that are lucky enough to be able to attend the conference show up at this session. I will try to take notes and post a synopsis here for all those who may be interested, but unable to attend the session and/or conference.
Looking forward to meeting some of you. Might even be persuaded to buy the 1st round of beverages afterwards for those forum members that attend (this is not a bribe
)

Update on attendance prizes for NECC and the Pocket PCs in Education Session:
Ken Nauss of
www.mathresources.com
has pledge two full copies of Portrait 4 Graphing & Calculating software (formerly called MRI Graphing Calculator) for the PPC to be given away as attendance prizes. Ken is scheduled to be in attendance at the session as well.
Portrait 4 is a menu driven graphing calculator. This program is extremely slick. I wouldn't dare pick up a "regular" graphing calculator, but Portrait is so easy. A must for anyone who has a PPC and also uses/needs a graphing calculator. Just think, you could eliminate one of the devices you carry around.
